Te Kākano tops iTunes in under 24 hours

Te Kakano – a compilation of modern
Maori language music launched yesterday. In just 24 hours, it’s gone straight
to No. 1 on NZ iTunes charts. Whatitiri Te Wake spoke to a couple of the album’s
contributors today. An album that celebrates
te reo Maori and young people. Its ascent to No. 1
on the iTunes charts in NZ has been fast. I was so surprised when I first saw that we had reached number one
on iTunes. I kept checking my phone and we were sitting at number two
after only six hours of release. So completely surprised
– it’s amazing. Te Kakano, an album that promotes
te reo Maori, not only to young people, but to everyone. This compilation allows us to increase the presence
of te reo Maori, and it encourages young people
to increase their use of te reo. It’s a compilation for rangatahi,
by rangatahi. Not only is this a way for us
to promote te reo, but it’s also a way to promote
our culture. It features trios and duos, but there’s also solos
that feature in the album for the singers
to express their inner thoughts. The album is available on Spotify,
iTunes and Google Play. Whatitiri Te Wake, Te Karere.
